Auroville Citizens Assembly | Water topic | chapter 6 Governance and planning| Auroras Eye Films
Join our journey to explore and understand what is needed to create an effective water vision for Auroville, the City the Earth needs. Auroville's Citizens Assembly is a research project to experiment with new models for community explorations and discussions. The aim is to explore how this model (which is currently being tried across the world) could work in our community. The aim of the pilot is to produce a water vision for Auroville and develop recommendations for its implementation. As in many places in the world Auroville faces a water shortage in coming years, so this is a critical community issue. Decisions on how we plan and govern our city are critical to ensure we have water now and in the future. This video features four different views on the current water situation in Auroville from the planning & governance perspective. Please join us in exploring the dreams, challenges and opportunities these Aurovilians face in their unique context. Presenting different perspectives here are: Mita, Renu, Sreevatsa and Suhasini. Auroville's Citizens Assembly is an action research project to experiment with new models for community explorations and discussions. The aim is to explore how this model (which is currently being tried across the world) could work in our unique community. The topic for this pilot assembly is to produce a water vision for Auroville and develop recommendations for its implementation. As in many places in the world Auroville faces a water shortage in coming years, so this is a critical community issue. Auroville is an experimental city in the making, that was founded in 1968 in Tamil Nadu, South India. It is dedicated to the ideal of human unity, based on the vision of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. Auroville wants to be a universal town where people of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. Auroville was founded on a barren plateau, which was successfully regenerated through reforestation work, rainwater conservation, construction of check-dams and tank rehabilitation works. However, bioregional and global change mean that it is likely to face a water shortage in the near future. Interviews Mita came to Auroville in 1995. She has been very involved in building bridges between Auroville and the rest of India to share knowledge on sustainable planning, especially related to water. She initiated the Status Study Group for a protective status for Auroville, and is a Member of the Highway Task Force (HTF) and the PVAC (Pondicherry, Viluppuram, Auroville, Cuddalore) Bioregional Forum, an attempt to have a participatory, cross-state, cross-administrative planning forum involving NGO’s and citizens in addition to government officials. Renu has been involved in Auroville since its inception. Her scope of work has been very varied over the years. She believes that Auroville must make use of its existing configuration and plan to enhance it on the basis of water protection, to mitigate the effects of climate change and over-use of groundwater. Renu is part of the PVAC (Pondicherry, Villipuram, Auroville, Cuddalore) group and has come together with local government agencies to help plan better water management. Suhasini (Auroville Design Consultants) is an architect and has been involved in initiating, developing, designing and implementing public projects in Auroville since 1985. Her work as an architect includes taking care of water: site planning with rain water management, water damage to buildings, water supply for development, dealing with waste water and water conservation. Her experience, awareness, concern and motiviaton make her an informed participant in water security planning for Auroville and the region. Sreevatsa is an architect and has been a part of Auroville for over a decade and is currently an elected member of L’Avenir d’Auroville (or TDC, the Town Development Council). His work in TDC, among coordinating other aspects of planning, also deals with water at various levels – ranging from creating policies and governance tools, infrastructure, planning and technical parameters. For him, Water is an important aspect of Design and Planning, thus crucial in realizing the vision of Auroville. Citizens Assembly Auroville (https://caexplorationauroville.wordpr...)
