Auroville Citizens' Assembly: Chapter 7 - Education & Awareness (English with subtitles)
To become water conscious our community needs to understand the current situation with water and ways we can act. This video features five different views on the current water situation in Auroville from the perspective of education and awareness. Please join us in exploring the dreams, challenges and opportunities these Aurovilians face in their unique context. Presenting different perspectives here are Ing-Marie, Meenakshi, Ribhu, Satprem and Tom. Auroville's Citizens Assembly is an action research project to experiment with new models for community explorations and discussions. The aim is to explore how this model (which is currently being tried across the world) could work in our unique community. The topic for this pilot assembly is to produce a water vision for Auroville and develop recommendations for its implementation. As in many places in the world Auroville faces a water shortage in coming years, so this is a critical community issue. Auroville is an experimental city in the making, that was founded in 1968 in Tamil Nadu, South India. It is dedicated to the ideal of human unity, based on the vision of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. Auroville wants to be a universal town where people of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. Auroville was founded on a barren plateau, which was successfully regenerated through reforestation work, rainwater conservation, construction of check-dams and tank rehabilitation works. However, bioregional and global change mean that it is likely to face a water shortage in the near future. Interviews Ing-Marie has been running the communications for the Auroville Water Group since 2017, trying to bring awareness of the water situation to the Auroville community. Next to this, she joined L'avenir d’ Auroville (Town Development Council) as a water coordinator in 2019, trying to increase and harmonize the communication between water players and processes. She represents her community in the Water Users Association - Residential Zone and within her community she helps with water-related issues and awareness. Meenakshi joined Auroville in 1976. She is a professional social worker, experienced university-level teacher, poet, writer, translator, magazine editor, counsellor and guide. She is also a well known educationist in Tamil Nadu in the field of innovative methods of teaching, particularly for the non-school going children and child labourers. She currently heads the Illaignarkal School in Auroville which provides educational and vocational training to the local villagers who work in Auroville. Meenakshi is a well-known modern poetess. Ribhu grew up in Auroville and after studying and working abroad, returned in 2009. He’s part of the WasteLess team, that focuses on developing and sharing educational materials for children (6-15 years) on the topic of waste. Together with the State Council of Educational Research and Training Tamil Nadu they have worked on rewriting teaching materials about water for the class 8 Social Science textbook. At present they are working on developing a curriculum to reduce marine plastic pollution for class 6, 7 and 8 students in Government schools. They are planning on developing such a curriculum / program for water too. Satprem joined Auroville 31 years ago. He created the Auroville Earth Institute, a research and training institute specialized in stabilized earth techniques. Auroville Earth Institute has built many buildings in Auroville and trained over 13,500 people from 91 countries. His main concern about water and architecture is to recycle wastewater and to harvest all the rainwater on the site itself to avoid runoff. He advocates the use of percolation pits over water tanks to harvest rainwater as he feels they are cheaper and easier to make. Tom is involved with the Auroville Water Group, by participating in reflections on water, and with Pour Tous Water, in solving technical water issues. His work revolves around finding water sources for Auroville’s future, addressing current technical issues of groundwater supply, maintaining relationships with water players at the regional level and sharing his knowledge of the local water conditions and sound water management.
